SPI is a fast-growing food and consumer products packaging company with five production plants spread throughout France. The company boasts a production capacity of nine lines producing 40,000 tons of packaging at its largest facility in Somme Ham, which also features an 8,000-square-meter (26,246-square-foot) warehouse. Annual revenues are over 37 million Euros (US$51.4 million).

The Challenge:

  • The nature of the business requires specialized facilities with clean rooms and zone temperature and humidity controls to ensure public health and the traceability of components and compounds.
  • In a highly competitive industry, maintaining high levels of customer service and quick turnaround are a priority


The Solution:

  • SPI decided to establish an automated information system to cover all of the warehouses and workshops in the company. The system had to be able to handle data flow for all activities at SPI—product management, raw materials, inventory, employee scheduling, quality control and financial management.
  • Psion Teklogix’ WORKABOUT PRO handheld computers were chosen to fulfill the two-way communication needs between the central server and the warehouse and production line employees.
